Gleaton Jones, a 21-year-old former University of Georgia football player and member of the 2021 national championship team, tragically passed away on December 13, 2024, after suffering critical injuries in a car accident during a hunting trip at St. George Island, Florida.
Jones sustained a traumatic brain injury in the accident on December 10, prompting emergency surgery to alleviate swelling. Despite efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries three days later.
A native of Albany, Georgia, Jones was a walk-on running back for the Georgia Bulldogs and part of the historic team that secured the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship, breaking a 41-year title drought for the program. Although he did not appear in any games, Jones remained deeply connected to the team through 2023 and was described by teammates as a dedicated and supportive member.
Jones excelled as a multi-sport athlete at Deerfield-Windsor Academy in Albany. He earned All-State, All-Region, and All-Albany honors in football, was named to the GISA All-Star team, and served as team captain. He was also a standout member of the school’s 2019 State Champion track team and played basketball, showcasing his versatility and leadership.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Jones was an accomplished student and active member of the University of Georgia community. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and was on track to graduate from the Terry School of Business in the spring of 2025 with a marketing degree. His plans included returning to Albany to help manage his family’s farm, a role he eagerly anticipated.
Jones’ passing deeply affected his family, friends, and former teammates. His younger brother, Cole Jones, paid tribute on social media, calling him a “Damn good Dawg and a damn good brother,” a sentiment echoed by those who knew him. The Jones family announced a celebration of life service to be held on December 16 at Wynfield Plantation.
Jones is survived by his parents, Marlin and Kirk Jones, and his brother, Cole. He leaves a legacy of resilience, leadership, and commitment to his community and team.
