On October 9 and 10, 2024, two tragic deaths occurred within a 24-hour period at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, according to university officials.
The first incident took place around 10:30 p.m. on October 9 at Nash Hall when a student plummeted from the dormitory building. The next morning, another student was found unresponsive in Alma Clark Glass Hall, a separate dormitory on the campus.
According to law enforcement, there were “no initial indications of foul play” in both incidents and it seems there is no link between the two fatalities or any ongoing threat to the campus community.
The student who fell from Nash Hall was identified as Micah Mazzuca. Mazzuca had recently become a student at Western Washington University, with ambitions of becoming a high school choir, drama, and English teacher. He was pursuing a double major in music and education.
According to the medical examiner, both students were 18 years of age. The first death, following the fall from the dormitory, was deemed a suicide, while preliminary investigations suggest that the second student might have died from a drug overdose the previous night, said law enforcement officials.
University officials referred to these incidents as “heartbreaking events.” The university, which boasts a student body of nearly 14,747 and is located 21 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border, has made counseling and wellness resources available through the WWU Counseling and Wellness Center and Employee Assistance Program for the students and staff impacted by these tragic events.
The university has stated that it will hold off on releasing further details regarding the deaths until the completion of the investigators’ work, in an effort to respect the privacy of the students’ families.
