Girl Killed by Boat Propeller in Freak Accident

An 11-year-old girl, identified as Brooke Mejeur, died on Saturday, November 2, 2024, after being ejected from a pontoon boat and struck by its propeller on Lake Osborne in Palm Beach County, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).

A preliminary investigation by the FWC revealed that two adults and three minors were on the 20-foot pontoon boat, which was in motion. Suddenly, the boat’s bow dipped, causing the 11-year-old to be thrown into the water. The boat’s propeller struck the child. Rescuers pulled the 11-year-old from the water and brought her to shore, but she died from her injuries.

When search crews arrived, fellow boaters initially thought they were witnessing a routine emergency drill. However, once they understood the true nature of the tragedy, they were filled with deep concern and heartbreak over what had happened.

The FWC is investigating the accident. In a statement, the agency said, “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Brooke Mejeur during this incredibly difficult time.

A similar tragic incident occurred recently at the Jersey Shore, where 18-year-old Zeina Mahafzah lost her life after being struck by a boat propeller. The accident happened on August 25, 2024, near Sunset Park in Harvey Cedars, New Jersey. Mahafzah was on a raft and attempted to reboard a boat when she was struck by the propeller, resulting in fatal injuries. At the time of the accident, the boat was operated by her father, and others on board were traumatized by the event.

Lake Osborne is a popular destination for boating and fishing. Luke Price and his friends, who frequent the area regularly, mentioned observing several boating accidents on those waters. Price explained that this tragic incident has changed his perspective. Having spent a lifetime on the water, he noted that it’s easy to become overly comfortable, which is something to avoid in such an environment. He emphasized the importance of always taking precautions, as anything can happen.

The FWC advises boaters to wear life jackets, designate a sober driver, and avoid riding on the bow, gunwales, or swimming platform to prevent such accidents. They also recommend having a plan if someone falls overboard, including slowing down the boat and throwing a flotation device to the person in the water.
