During the November 20, 2024 episode of CNN’s “Newsnight,” host Abby Phillip intervened in a panel discussion to address what she perceived as disrespectful behavior from pro-Trump guest Bruce LeVell. The incident occurred when LeVell referred to Democratic strategist Julie Roginsky as “dear” during a heated exchange.
The discussion centered on investigations into alleged sexual misconduct by former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz. LeVell asserted that the Department of Justice had concluded there was “nothing there” regarding the allegations against Gaetz. Roginsky challenged this characterization, noting that the DOJ had stated they didn’t have sufficient evidence to indict rather than declaring Gaetz innocent.
In response to LeVell’s “dear” comment, Phillip interjected, stating, “Do not address a grown woman in that condescending tone at my table.” LeVell acknowledged Phillip’s rebuke, and the host moved the discussion forward. This exchange highlights the ongoing efforts by CNN hosts to maintain civil discourse during political discussions.
This was not LeVell’s first contentious appearance on CNN. In August, anchor Laura Coates admonished him for talking over her during a panel discussion about former President Trump’s comments regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity. During that exchange, Coates challenged LeVell’s assertions about Harris’ racial identification during her political career.
Gaetz, whom Trump had nominated as attorney general, later withdrew his name from consideration, citing the ongoing investigation as a distraction. The Department of Justice had previously informed Gaetz that he would not face charges concerning their probe into allegations of sexual misconduct, including claims of inappropriate behavior with a 17-year-old girl and paying for “intimate encounters” with other women.
CNN has experienced a significant decline in viewership, with recent reports indicating that the network’s ratings have plummeted to their lowest levels since 2000. Amidst these challenges, on-air personnel reportedly feel the pressure of potential cuts, with high-profile anchors like Anderson Cooper and Erin Burnett facing uncertain futures as the network considers wage reductions and layoffs.
CNN has taken a firm stance on maintaining professional discourse on its programming. The network stated there is “zero room for racism or bigotry” and emphasized its commitment to fostering thoughtful conversations between those who disagree while preventing guests from being demeaned.
