Pro Boxing Champion Shot Dead

World Boxing Foundation International Welterweight Champion Mylik Birdsong was tragically shot and killed in Los Angeles, California on Sunday, September 29, 2024. Birdsong, 31, had been standing near his mother’s house, outside a vehicle with his girlfriend when an assailant opened fire from a dark-colored SUV, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

The attack occurred on 87th Street in Los Angeles, California just a few blocks from Birdsong’s residence. As the gunfire erupted, Birdsong attempted to flee towards his home, but two suspects from the vehicle pursued him on foot, continuing to shoot. He collapsed in his driveway after being hit seven times and was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

LAPD officials reported that Birdsong suffered seven gunshot wounds to his torso. The suspects involved in the shooting escaped, and authorities have not yet determined a motive for the attack. According to the LAPD, a dark-colored SUV drove westbound on 87th Street and opened fire on Birdsong.

The professional boxer, known as “King Mylik,” had built an impressive record in the sport, boasting 15 wins, one loss, and one draw, with 10 victories by knockout. His most recent accomplishment came earlier this year when he claimed the vacant World Boxing Foundation International Welterweight title after defeating Jerry Bradford unanimously on March 23.

Birdsong was scheduled to fight Gor Yeritsyan at the Commerce Casino & Hotel in Los Angeles on October 26. The bout, part of the UFC Fight Pass card, was anticipated to be another stepping stone in Birdsong’s career as he worked toward higher-level championship opportunities. His death has shocked the boxing community and left many mourning the loss of a rising star in the sport.

Tributes from fans and fellow boxers began to pour in on social media as news of Birdsong’s death spread. Birdsong’s Instagram profile, where he often posted updates on his training and career, has since been filled with comments from those who admired him as an athlete and an individual.

Birdsong had risen to prominence not only for his in-ring abilities but also for his dedication to his craft and connection with fans. His journey through the boxing world was marked by hard work, discipline, and the support of a loyal fanbase.

At this time, authorities are continuing their investigation into the shooting, but no suspects have been apprehended. The LAPD has requested that anyone with information regarding the attack contact the department immediately.
