In a shocking incident in Shanghai, China, three people lost their lives, and 15 others were injured after a man went on a stabbing rampage inside a Walmart supermarket on Monday evening, September 30, 2024. The attack occurred at the Ludu International Commercial Plaza in the Songjiang district, a bustling area in the city’s southwest.
Chinese authorities reported that the 37-year-old suspect, identified only by his surname “Lin,” was arrested at the scene. Police stated that Lin had traveled to Shanghai to “vent his anger due to a personal economic dispute,” and investigations into the motive are ongoing. According to law enforcement officials, the victims died from their injuries at the hospital, while those injured are expected to recover as their wounds are not considered life-threatening.
An eyewitness, identified as “Shi,” described the scene to BBC News as being covered in blood. Shi, who operates a jewelry store on the ground floor of the Ludu International Commercial Plaza, recalled how numerous firefighters and SWAT officers entered the mall, directing people to evacuate. He added that he initially had no idea what was happening until people suddenly began fleeing in a state of panic. Shi noted that no one was prepared for such an event, highlighting how terrifying and unsettling it was, and mentioned that he narrowly avoided harm.
The supermarket reopened the following day with heightened security measures in place. In China, where firearms are strictly prohibited, there has been a troubling rise in knife attacks, which have been a growing concern for authorities.
Last month, a 10-year-old Japanese student was fatally stabbed near his school in southern China. In June, four U.S. college instructors were attacked and stabbed while in a public park in the northeastern city of Jilin. A month earlier, a man killed two people and injured 21 others in a stabbing incident at a hospital in Yunnan, a province in southern China.
Lin’s motive is yet to be fully understood, and authorities have promised to release more details as the investigation progresses. Meanwhile, local law enforcement has increased patrols and bolstered security at public spaces in the city.
