Prince Andrew, Duke of York, is being pushed to secure the necessary funds for essential renovations to his long-term residence, the Royal Lodge, situated in Windsor Great Park. He has a set deadline of the close of 2024, during which he must prove his ability to finance approximately $2.6 million in upgrades, or risk losing his place in the historical property.
The vast estate, which is estimated to be worth around $37 million, has been the Duke’s residence since 2003 due to a 75-year lease agreement with the Crown Estate. However, the upkeep of the 30-room mansion has been a financial burden, especially after King Charles III pulled back financial assistance. The cessation of the annual $3.8 million funding, previously set aside for Andrew’s security costs, has put the Duke in a difficult situation. Consequently, Andrew has resorted to cheaper security measures, hoping it would enable him to stay at the Royal Lodge.
Andrew’s challenges in meeting the financial commitments related to the property have led to speculation about his future living situation. King Charles has suggested Frogmore Cottage as a potential substitute. This cottage, formerly the home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, is a smaller and more cost-effective option compared to the Royal Lodge, though it still comes with a sizable maintenance cost. However, Andrew has shown reluctance, reportedly rejecting the offer multiple times, as the cottage is significantly smaller than his current dwelling.
Andrew has already initiated renovation efforts, reportedly spending more than $250,000 on temporary roof repairs. However, this work has been deemed insufficient. As per a royal insider, the Crown Estate expects reassurance that he can manage a comprehensive renovation, not just minor repairs.
Reports indicate that King Charles’s patience is running thin. Andrew is at a crucial point, where he needs to show his capacity to fund the comprehensive renovations; failing which, the Crown Estate might start discussing his exit from the Royal Lodge.
If Andrew is unable to raise the required funds, the Crown Estate may consider using the Royal Lodge for commercial purposes or as a home for other members of the royal family. The Duke’s future at Windsor Great Park hangs in the balance as he faces this crucial deadline.
