Mom, 3 Young Daughters Found Dead at Home

On Tuesday, September 17, 2024, a welfare check conducted in Wolcottville, Indiana led to a grim discovery of four deceased individuals in a residence. This has triggered an investigation spearheaded by the Indiana State Police (ISP).

The call for a welfare check was responded to by officers from the Wolcottville Police Department. Arriving at the South Main Street residence, near the Wolcottville United Methodist Church around 11:20 a.m., they found an adult woman and three children lifeless.

The victims have been identified by the Noble County Coroner as Rebecca Hughes, 32, and her three daughters Evelyn Newell, 8, Allison Newell, 6, and Amelia Newell, 5. The procedures to determine the cause and manner of their deaths, including autopsies and toxicology reports, are still ongoing.

The Wolcottville Police Department, upon discovering the bodies, reached out to the Indiana State Police. The ISP promptly dispatched detectives and crime scene investigators to the scene. They are now leading the investigation, with aid from the Noble County Sheriff’s Office, the Noble County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Noble County Coroner’s Office.

Despite the incident, officials have assured that there is no immediate threat to public safety. However, they have not disclosed additional details regarding the circumstances that led to the deaths.

The small community of Wolcottville, Indiana, home to a little over 1,000 residents, has been profoundly impacted by this incident. The shock and sorrow are palpable among neighbors mourning the loss of this young family. A memorial outside the Hughes’ residence has been growing since that Tuesday as the community comes together in grief.

Jonathan Newell, the father of the girls, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to help with the funeral expenses. The campaign has already raised over $47,000 in a short time. In a statement on the GoFundMe page, Newell hinted that Rebecca “took them with her when she passed,” but this has not been confirmed by officials.

Neighbors recall the sight of the three girls playing outside and now struggle to accept their untimely demise. “I wish it could have been me instead of those girls because I’ve lived my life, and they didn’t even have a chance,” said Pam Laughlin, who knew the girls from Vacation Bible School.

Since the discovery of the deaths, the doorstep of the residence has been adorned with flowers and stuffed animals as a tribute to the lives lost.

The tragic event in Wolcottville has caught the attention of the entire state. Local officials are urging anyone with potentially relevant information to step forward and assist the Indiana State Police in their ongoing investigation.
