Missing Newlywed Nurse Found Dead

Melissa Jubane, a 32-year-old cardiac nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Southwest Portland, Oregon, was reported missing on September 4, 2024, after failing to show up for her morning shift. The disappearance of the recently married nurse sparked a three-day search that ended in tragedy when her remains were discovered and her neighbor was arrested for murder.

Jubane had just returned from her wedding in Hawaii, where she married her longtime partner Bryan Llantero on August 24. The couple had dated for over a decade before getting engaged last year in Oahu. After their wedding ceremony with friends and family, they flew to Washington State to spend Labor Day with Jubane’s family. Jubane then returned to her apartment in Beaverton, Oregon on September 2, as it was close to her workplace.

According to Beaverton Police, Llantero last heard from his wife around 6 a.m. on September 4, the morning she did not report to the hospital. When Jubane failed to show up for her shift, her coworkers became concerned and contacted the authorities. Police conducted a welfare check at her apartment in Beaverton’s Five Oaks neighborhood, where they were met by apartment complex staff, but Jubane was not found there.

“Efforts by officers and family members to contact Melissa throughout the day were unsuccessful, as her phone appeared to be turned off,” the Beaverton Police Department stated in a Facebook post. They added, “Additionally, searches of Melissa’s bank and credit card records yielded no new information regarding her location.”

With no leads to Jubane’s whereabouts, she was listed as a missing person just after 3 p.m. on September 4. The community rallied around the search efforts, with approximately 100 people joining in to look for the missing nurse.

As the investigation progressed, authorities made a breakthrough on September 6. “As a result of an extensive investigation, it was determined that one of Melissa’s neighbors, 27-year-old Bryce Johnathan Schubert of Beaverton was involved in her disappearance,” police announced on Saturday morning.

Schubert was arrested on Friday evening and charged with second-degree murder. He is currently being held in the Washington County, Oregon jail. Records show that Schubert had previously worked as a nurse at Providence Portland Medical Center from September 2022 to October 2023.

The police have not released details about how they connected Schubert to Jubane’s disappearance or the circumstances surrounding her death. The exact location where her remains were found has also not been disclosed, as authorities are working to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

The news of Jubane’s death has deeply affected her family, friends, and coworkers. Providence St. Vincent Hospital, where Jubane worked, released a statement expressing their grief.

The Oregon Nurses Association has also expressed their condolences and support for Jubane’s family and colleagues during this difficult time.

As the community grapples with the loss of a dedicated healthcare professional, the Beaverton Police Department continues to investigate the case. They have urged anyone with additional information to come forward and contact them at 503-526-2280.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support Jubane’s family as they navigate through this challenging period. The page describes Jubane as a “ball of joy” and highlights her commitment to her work and community.
