Famous guitarist, Freddie Salem, succumbed to cancer at the age of 70 on September 23, 2024. Salem is best remembered for his contributions to the Southern rock band Outlaws.
The band confirmed his death in a post on their official Facebook page, stating, “It’s with a heavy heart that we have to tell Outlaws fans about the passing of our former guitarist Freddie Salem. Freddie passed from complications due to cancer and will be remembered for his outgoing personality and passion for music. He was an electric performer and beloved musician and he will be missed.”
Salem’s association with the Outlaws started in 1977 at the age of 23. He participated in five albums, including “Bring It Back Alive” and “Playin’ to Win” both released in 1978. His distinctive guitar sound played a significant role in shaping the band’s Southern rock style, and songs like “Green Grass and High Tides” became popular among fans.
Bandmate and friend Monte Yoho paid tribute to Salem, reflecting on the strong relationship they fostered during their touring years. Yoho remembered Salem not only for his musical skills but also for his character, specifically his memorable sense of humor.
Salem was born in Akron, Ohio and got acquainted with music at an early age, thanks to his father’s jukebox in his bar. By the age of 16, Salem was already a professional guitar player. Reflecting on his time with the band, he once stated, “It was just one of those things… Musically and career-wise, I wanted a little more.”
After leaving the Outlaws in 1982, Salem ventured into other musical projects. He formed Freddie Salem & the Wildcats and released the album “Cat Dance” the same year. In the early 90s, he opened several live music venues in Akron, Ohio. His dedication to music remained throughout his life, and he was inducted into the RockGodz Hall of Fame in 2016.
The Outlaws were a prominent part of the Southern rock scene, and Salem was instrumental in the band’s success. They sold over 10 million albums and earned platinum and gold records during his time with them. The band toured heavily, often opening for iconic bands like the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead. Salem recalled his tenure with the band as one of the best periods, with the band achieving significant success and performing at major arenas around the globe.
