37 Killed By Gunmen in Horrific Attack

In a suspected retaliation by Boko Haram militants, the northeastern Nigerian village of Mafa in Yobe state experienced a brutal attack on the afternoon of September 1, 2024. The assault resulted in a substantial number of fatalities and missing persons, underscoring the ongoing security issues that have plagued the region for over ten years.

The Yobe police spokesperson, Dungus Abdulkarim, stated that the attack was likely in response to the killing of two suspected Boko Haram members by local vigilantes. Abdulkarim detailed that about 150 alleged Boko Haram militants, armed with rifles and rocket-propelled grenades, arrived on over 50 motorcycles to launch the assault on Mafa. The attack resulted in a significant number of casualties and widespread destruction, including the burning of numerous shops and homes.

The attackers reportedly started shooting at a market before setting homes and shops on fire. In the ensuing chaos, they pursued fleeing residents into the nearby bush, where many were shot. The actual number of fatalities is not yet confirmed due to varying reports from officials and local residents.

An anonymous military official reported that at least 37 bodies were recovered and taken to Babangida General Hospital.

Modu Mohammed, a Mafa resident, estimated the death toll to be over 100 and mentioned that several residents were still missing.

Survivor Umar Abubakar stated that over 50 decomposing bodies were buried in Mafa and surrounding villages. He further revealed that they had found 87 corpses so far and were still searching for wounded relatives who had escaped into the bush.

The Mafa attack is part of an ongoing pattern of violence that has affected northeastern Nigeria for the past 15 years. Yobe state, along with its neighboring states of Borno and Adamawa, has been at the epicenter of an insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced over two million people.

The resurgence of Boko Haram and its offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province, has raised new concerns. In recent months, these groups have escalated their activities, targeting both military facilities and civilian populations.

The region’s security situation has been further complicated by the activities of armed bandit groups, often working in conjunction with Islamist militants. These groups are responsible for numerous atrocities, including murder, rape, kidnapping, and cattle rustling.

The Mafa attack has reignited debates about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s counterterrorism measures. Critics believe that the government’s approach has failed to address the root causes of the insurgency and protect vulnerable communities.

Bulama Abiso, Executive Director of the Network of Civil Society in Borno State, has criticized security agencies for what he views as a decrease in their efforts and a lack of effective civil-military relations. He maintains that these factors have enabled the insurgents to conduct attacks with relative impunity.

The Nigerian government faces increasing pressure to enhance its response to the security crisis. Experts are calling for a more comprehensive approach that couples military action with social initiatives and political reforms to address the factors fueling the conflict.
