Walmart Employee Fatally Stabbed at Store

Jessica Morales, aged 65, met a tragic end when she was fatally stabbed inside a Walmart Supercenter in Lake Elsinore, California on the morning of August 5, 2024. The incident was reported to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, prompting a rapid response to the store located in the 29000 block of Central Avenue shortly after 7 a.m.

Upon reaching the scene, the deputies discovered Morales, a Menifee resident, suffering from several stab injuries. Despite the immediate medical response, Morales was declared dead on-site.

The authorities have named Lonnie Hinton, a 29-year-old from Wildomar, as the main suspect. Hinton, recently on parole after a March 2024 release from prison for a robbery conviction, surrendered himself at the Lake Elsinore Sheriff’s Station following the incident. He is currently facing charges of first-degree murder and is detained without bail at the Cois Byrd Detention Center.

According to a press release from The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, the assault appears to be a random act, with no evidence of any prior interaction between Hinton and Morales. The news has left the community and Walmart employees in shock, particularly due to the absence of a clear motive for the violent act.

In response to the tragedy, a Walmart spokesperson extended condolences to Morales’ family and expressed the company’s deep regret over the incident. The representative announced that the Lake Elsinore store would remain closed during the ongoing investigation. The company also pledged to support its employees through this difficult time.

Prior to this, Hinton was arrested in 2020, accused of stabbing a restaurant employee in Perris, California. The charges of assault with a deadly weapon were dropped as part of a plea agreement, and Hinton was instead charged with robbery. The details of his recent release and parole status have led to questions about the circumstances preceding the Walmart incident.

An anonymous coworker of the victim described Morales as an incredibly kind individual and a cherished friend, highlighting the profound personal impact of her loss.

The tranquil suburban community of Lake Elsinore, located about 75 miles southeast of Los Angeles, is generally known for its picturesque scenery. This incident has disrupted the community’s peace, leaving residents and local officials seeking justice for Morales.

While the Lake Elsinore Walmart remains closed, the company is offering support to its employees in the wake of this incident. As the investigation unfolds, the community is focused on recovery and ensuring justice is served for Morales.
