An altercation on a Queens, New York City subway platform ended in tragedy on August 26, 2024, when a 17-year-old man was fatally struck by an oncoming F train. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. at the Elmhurst Avenue station, causing major disruptions to train services throughout the day.
According to police reports, the 17-year-old, whose identity has not been released, was involved in a physical fight with another individual on the platform. Witnesses reported that the altercation quickly intensified when the 17-year-old struck the other teen, who is reported to be 18 years old, with a bottle.
In an attempt to escape, the younger teen fled down the platform and either fell or jumped off the station platform, entering the tunnel between the Elmhurst Avenue and Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue stations. He reportedly slipped and fell onto the tracks as he ran through the tunnel. Before he could get up, a Jamaica-bound F train entered the tunnel and fatally struck him.
Emergency services arrived promptly, but the 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The other teen involved sustained minor injuries, including a head wound, and was treated at Elmhurst Hospital. Authorities have not made any arrests, and no charges have been filed.
The incident led to significant delays and disruptions across the E, F, M, and R subway lines as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority worked to restore service. Commuters were advised to seek alternate routes as the investigation continued into the evening.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the exact sequence of events that led to the young man’s death.
