On Sunday, August 4, 2024, a verbal dispute turned deadly outside Lawrence’s Fish & Shrimp in the Armour Square neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. According to the Chicago Police Department, the violence erupted around 3 a.m., leading to a shooting that killed one man and injured three others.
The heated argument between two groups of men escalated into a physical clash, ending with fatal gunfire. The deceased, a 39-year-old man identified as Joseph Garcia, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Among the injured, a 27-year-old man is in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds after he checked himself into a nearby hospital. Another victim, a 34-year-old man with gunshot wounds on his leg, is reported to be in fair condition after being transported to the hospital. A 21-year-old man, who was shot in his left calf, independently made it to a hospital and is in good condition.
The Chicago police responded promptly, securing the vicinity and expanding the crime scene to nearby properties after finding shell casings scattered across the parking lot.
Witnesses described the suspect as a Hispanic male in his late teens or early twenties, with a shaggy haircut, who left the scene with a female accomplice in a white SUV.
The investigation is currently being handled by detectives from Area One. No arrests have been made to date.
An onlooker, who claimed to be a friend of the deceased, witnessed the horrific incident unfold, along with his teenage children.
Lawrence’s Fish & Shrimp, a community staple at 2120 South Canal Street since 1950, is popular for its fried seafood. Despite the violent incident, the restaurant continued with its regular business operations.
In a separate incident around 5 a.m. the same morning, five men, aged between 24 and 32, independently sought treatment for gunshot wounds at the University of Chicago Medical Center. This shooting reportedly took place in Washington Park, on the 5100 block of South Calumet Avenue.
The victims sustained various injuries. A 25-year-old man was wounded in his lower extremities, while a 24-year-old was shot in the back. A 32-year-old man suffered a grazing wound to his right arm and two 26-year-old men were injured, one in the chin and the other in the thumb.
Despite their injuries, the five men were hesitant to provide any information about the shooting. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing, led by Area 1 detectives.
Chicago continues to grapple with the issue of gun violence. These latest incidents add to the city’s growing list. The police are steadfast in their investigations, aiming to bring justice to the victims and provide answers to the bereaved family and community.
