A Philadelphia resident, 43-year-old Raheem Jefferson, was killed in an execution-style shooting outside the Al-Aqsa Islamic Society mosque.
The incident, which occurred on the afternoon of July 30, 2024, has been condemned by local officials and left the community reeling.
Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small detailed the harrowing events at a news conference on Wednesday. Jefferson was walking with another man to the mosque for a prayer service when a suspect approached from behind and opened fire. “It’s all caught on camera,” Small told reporters. “The shooter stands over the victim from just a few feet away and continues firing shots at this 43-year-old victim while he lays in the parking lot. So clearly, an execution-type homicide.”
The attacker fired at least 17 rounds using a large-caliber semi-automatic weapon, striking Jefferson multiple times, including at least once in the head and multiple times in the torso. Jefferson was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a nearby hospital.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and the police have not determined a motive. Small mentioned that it appears Jefferson was the intended target. The shooter was seen fleeing the scene in a dark-colored sedan while wearing dark-colored clothing. Authorities are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
The Al-Aqsa Islamic Society mosque, established in 1989 in the lower northeast neighborhood of Kensington, aims to protect and sustain the Islamic community in Philadelphia.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro condemned the incident on social media, expressing his sorrow and solidarity with the Al-Aqsa community. “Violence outside of a house of worship is deeply painful and traumatizing for those simply showing up to worship and practice their faith,” Shapiro wrote.”
Raheem Jefferson was a beloved figure in his community. Friends and family described him as a devout Muslim and a caring individual who was always willing to help others. His death has left a significant void in the lives of those who knew him.
Local leaders and interfaith groups have rallied to support the Al-Aqsa community during this difficult time. The Philadelphia chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations expressed their shock and concern over the incident.
The shooting was captured by numerous surveillance cameras around the mosque. Footage shows the shooter approaching Jefferson and another man from behind, opening fire, and then fleeing the scene.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. The $20,000 reward aims to incentivize witnesses or anyone with knowledge of the incident to assist in the investigation.
