Pedro David Guadarrama Ceron, 30, and his pregnant partner, Emma Nelly Diazleal Lopez, 33, both of San Jose, California, tragically drowned on July 16, 2024. The couple was swept off the rocks by a gigantic wave while photographing near West Cliff Drive, an area ominously referred to as the “death rocks” due to its treacherous currents.
While posing for photos on the rocks, the couple was submerged by a sudden wave. Onlookers promptly contacted 911, resulting in first responders discovering Ceron and Lopez motionless and face down in the water. Despite immediate rescue operations, both were later declared dead after being extricated from the ocean.
The Santa Cruz Fire Department reported the incident occurred around 6:15 p.m. Fire Chief Rob Oatey confirmed that, despite exhaustive attempts to revive them, both victims succumbed to their injuries. Oatey underscored the perilous nature of the area, with its uneven rocks and unpredictable wave behavior. The constantly changing surface and the presence of strong currents, coupled with obstructions such as coves, caves, and rocks, increase the risk of entrapment or unconsciousness for anyone who falls into the water.
Ignoring warning signs, the couple had accessed the rocks via a cliff path. The Santa Cruz Fire Department reiterated the importance of ocean safety and adherence to guidelines. They issued a public statement cautioning, “Never turn your back on the ocean and be aware of tidal conditions.” They further highlighted that certain southerly swells and high tides can produce unexpected waves that can catch beach visitors unprepared, often with fatal results.
The couple’s family shared with the media that they were engaged and had recently discovered they were expecting a child.
This incident underscores the necessity of caution along coastal areas. Chief Oatey encouraged the use of safety equipment and respect for lifesaving resources. He also pointed out that the emergency equipment box near the incident site was found empty, potentially hampering rescue attempts.
The Santa Cruz coastline, with its stunning vistas, is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. Yet, it’s also infamous for its dangerous conditions, especially around the “death rocks.” Over time, several lives have been lost in this area, leading to repeated warnings from authorities. The combination of slippery surfaces and unpredictable waves can swiftly transform a picturesque visit into a hazardous situation.
