On August 1, 2024, Jack Nicholson was grieved to learn that his agent and friend of over six decades, Sandy Bresler, had passed away at 87 following a brief illness. Bresler’s guidance was instrumental in Nicholson’s iconic Hollywood career.
Bresler, according to a statement from his family, died in Santa Monica, California. The bond between Nicholson and Bresler, known for his commitment to his clients and talent management, was formed in the early 1960s during their service with the California Air National Guard. Their professional relationship endured for more than 60 years.
In his acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 1999 Golden Globes, Nicholson jokingly said, “There is only one agent who has stayed with me, guided me, tolerated my tantrums, my operatic behavior and so forth. His name escapes me,” then affectionately added, “Sandy Bresler, my pal, and comrade in arms.”
Bresler’s career started in 1960 as a secretary at the William Morris Agency. He established himself swiftly and by 1983, he co-founded Bresler-Kelly & Associates, a boutique agency. He managed the careers of renowned Hollywood personalities such as Judd Hirsch and Randy Quaid. Beyond his clientele, Bresler played a crucial role in the Association of Talent Agents (ATA), serving as its president for over a decade, thereby extending its influence in Hollywood.
Karen Stuart, the executive director of the ATA, acknowledged Sandy’s strong dedication to the talent agency field. She stated that his contribution was vital in advocating for their members and enhancing the industry. She further mentioned his role as a mentor to many and his enduring influence in the field.
Despite undergoing a sextuple heart bypass surgery in 2003, Bresler continued to work diligently for his clients and the entertainment industry, demonstrating his resilience and professionalism.
In recent years, Nicholson, 85, known for his roles in “The Shining” and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, has mostly remained away from public attention, leading to speculations about his health. Although he has denied retiring due to health issues, he has been inactive in the entertainment industry since 2010.
Bresler leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Nancy, their two children, Eric and Jennifer, and twin grandsons, Brandon and Jonah. His funeral took place on August 6 at Hillside Memorial Park in Los Angeles, California.
