Former MLB Star Died in Accident at 31

Reyes Moronta, a former pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB), has tragically passed away at age 31 after a motorcycle accident. The fatal incident took place near Santiago, Dominican Republic, on July 28, 2024, outside the residence of Moronta’s father in the Villa Gonzalez locality.

Moronta, who had a reputation for his speedy fastball and slider, had a six-season MLB career playing for teams such as the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Los Angeles Angels.

Moronta’s journey in the MLB started in 2010 when he was signed by the Giants as an international free agent. His MLB debut came on the fifth of September 2017. He had a standout season in 2018, featuring in 69 games and achieving a 2.49 ERA. The Giants expressed their condolences on their social media platform, stating, “His warm spirit will be missed by all, and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time.”

In 2019, Moronta underwent a surgical procedure due to a shoulder injury, which resulted in him missing the entire 2020 season. Despite his attempts to regain his top form, he spent the subsequent years transitioning between various teams, including the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, and Angels. During the 2022 season, he managed a 4.30 ERA over 39 relief appearances with the Dodgers and Diamondbacks.

In 2023, Moronta signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers. However, he was released during spring training. He then had a short stint with the Diablos Rojos del México of the Mexican League before joining the Angels organization. His tenure with the Angels was brief, as he was designated for assignment and then sent to the Triple-A Salt Lake Bees.

Moronta’s most recent team, the Aguilas Cibaenas of the Dominican Republic, posted on their social media accounts regarding his sudden demise, expressing deep regret over the tragic event.

The Mexican Baseball League also paid homage to Moronta, extending their sympathy to his family, friends, and former associates during their time of loss. Their baseball operations department and players offered their condolences and prayed for Moronta’s eternal peace.

Reyes Moronta’s MLB career, characterized by his formidable pitches and commitment to the game, will be remembered by his fans and peers alike. His progression from a young international free agent with the Giants to a significant player in MLB and Mexican League teams is a reflection of his talent and resolve.
