Ann Wingsong, Salazar’s representative and close friend, confirmed his death, which occurred on Sunday, August 11, 2024, at a friend’s residence in Brooklyn, New York. His demise has sparked a wave of heartfelt tributes from his peers and fans.
Born in Cuba in 1956, Salazar initiated his acting career in the late 1970s. He gained widespread recognition for his role as Chi Chi, the devoted accomplice to Al Pacino’s character, Tony Montana, in “Scarface.” The film, directed by Brian De Palma and penned by Oliver Stone, became a significant cultural reference and Salazar’s portrayal cemented his status in the film industry.
In “Scarface,” Salazar’s character plays a pivotal role, especially in the film’s gripping “chainsaw scene,” where Chi Chi assists in saving Montana’s life.
After “Scarface,” Salazar continued to make contributions to film and television. He collaborated with Pacino again in 1993’s “Carlito’s Way,” another movie directed by De Palma. Earlier this month, Salazar delivered his final performance at the Silver Legacy Resort and Casino in Reno, Nevada, where he performed from August 1 to August 4. According to his representative, Salazar had been managing heart-related health issues in recent years, including an enlarged heart. The exact cause of his death, however, remains undisclosed.
