Brazilian cyclist, Jaiane Souza Oliveira Fernandes, 34, lost her life in a tragic incident during a race in Baianópolis, Brazil on Sunday, July 28, 2024.
The race was nearing its conclusion when an unfortunate incident occurred involving Oliveira Fernandes, leading to distress among those watching and competing.
Oliveira Fernandes was struck by another cyclist during the race, causing her to lose control and collide with a parked sound truck adjacent to the track. The impact resulted in one of the large speakers falling on top of her. This occurred just before the finish line. Attempts were promptly made by onlookers to provide first aid, but her head injuries were substantial.
Medical personnel from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) who were present at the race provided immediate medical assistance and transported her to the nearest hospital. Despite their best efforts, she was declared dead due to the severity of her head injuries.
The incident was recorded on video which showed another cyclist moving dangerously close in front of Oliveira Fernandes, causing her to veer and crash into the sound truck. This led to the fall of the six-foot speaker onto her. Although local police arrived to investigate, the sound truck had already departed the scene, which hindered the investigation.
Oliveira Fernandes, a passionate cyclist who frequently took part in local cycling contests, lived in Luís Eduardo Magalhães and is survived by her husband, who was also a participant in the race, and their twin boys. Her untimely death has significantly impacted the local community and the cycling fraternity. The race organizers, Dubai Bikers, conveyed their grief on social media.
Another cyclist, involved in the same incident, was ejected from their bicycle but sustained no severe injuries and managed to complete the race.
This unfortunate occurrence has raised questions about the safety protocols practiced at such events. Local authorities have initiated an extensive investigation to identify the exact cause of the accident and to determine if there was any negligence that contributed to the event.
Known for her passion for cycling and dedication to the sport, Oliveira Fernandes was recognized by peers and friends as a “dedicated athlete and a loving mother.”
