A shocking incident unfolded at Rice University, Houston, Texas on August 26, 2024. The university community mourns the loss of Andrea Rodriguez Avila, a third-year student who was found dead in her dorm room, in what is being treated as a murder-suicide by the authorities.
Avila, 21, originally from Maryland, was found dead along with an unidentified male who seemingly died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This information was confirmed by Rice University Police Chief, Clemente Rodriguez.
The grim discovery was made in Jones College, a residence hall on campus, following a welfare check requested by Avila’s family when she failed to show up for her first semester classes. Upon entering the dorm room, officers found the deceased bodies of Avila and the male individual, who was not a student at Rice. The absence of forced entry signs led the investigators to surmise that Avila had likely allowed the suspect into her room.
A note found at the scene indicated relationship issues between the pair. Chief Rodriguez confirmed this, but emphasized that the inquiry was still ongoing.
Rice University President Reginald DesRoches expressed profound sadness over the incident, acknowledging the long-lasting impact this will have on the tight-knit community on campus. He assured Avila’s family of the university’s full support during this heartbreaking period and committed to offering necessary resources for students and staff.
President DesRoches also reassured the Rice community of their safety on campus, stating there was no continuing threat. He encouraged unity and compassion among the community members as they navigate through this challenging period. The incident led to a nearly two-hour shelter-in-place order across the campus while police secured the area.
Classes were canceled for the rest of the day and the following Tuesday, providing time for the university community to come to terms with the event.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths continues, led by the Rice University Police Department and supported by the Houston Police Department.
