The body of 20-year-old Leticia A. Castillo, a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was recovered by National Park Service (NPS) personnel on August 6, 2024, after a multi-day search in the Grand Canyon. Castillo had been missing since around August 3 and was found approximately 150 feet below the Twin Overlooks along Desert View Drive, marking the third death at the Grand Canyon in a single week.
Castillo’s remains were located following a rigorous search involving both ground and aerial teams. The recovery operation was completed despite facing inclement weather and hazardous terrain. Her body was subsequently transported to the rim of the canyon and transferred to the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination. As of now, the cause of death has not been released, and it remains unclear whether foul play is suspected.
Her family and friends shared their profound grief over the loss. Castillo’s cousin, Alexis Hernandez, paid tribute to her on Facebook, expressing how deeply she will be missed. Hernandez mentioned the love and cherished memories they shared and noted how Castillo had the ability to brighten any room she entered.
This tragic incident follows two other fatalities at the Grand Canyon within a week. On July 31, 20-year-old Abel Joseph Mejia from North Carolina fell 400 feet to his death near Pipe Creek Overlook while on a mission trip. The following day, an unidentified 43-year-old man from Missouri died after attempting an illegal BASE jump from Yavapai Point. He fell 500 feet after his parachute separated during the jump.
The Grand Canyon, a popular destination for millions of visitors each year, has a history of fatal incidents. On average, 11 deaths are reported annually at the park, with causes ranging from falls to dehydration and medical emergencies. Castillo’s death brings the total number of fatalities in the Grand Canyon to 11 for the year 2024.
Park officials continue to stress the importance of safety while exploring the Grand Canyon. Visitors are urged to stay on designated trails, keep a safe distance from the edge, and be prepared for the challenging and often unpredictable environment.
The investigation into Castillo’s death is ongoing, and more information is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
