An early morning car accident on Long Island resulted in the tragic death of two teenagers and left three others injured on August 1, 2024. The fatal incident involved a 2010 Toyota Prius that flipped over on the Southern State Parkway in Islip, New York, creating a scene of devastation.
The crash happened near exit 43A on the eastbound Southern State Parkway around 2 a.m. Responding to an emergency call, police discovered the overturned Prius in a wooded area off the shoulder. Law enforcement identified 18-year-old Oliver Charles from Deer Park as the driver and 17-year-old Dymond Saunders from West Babylon as a passenger. Both were declared dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel, leaving their loved ones coping with this sudden tragedy.
Three additional occupants of the Prius, who remain unidentified, were taken to local hospitals with injuries believed to be nonfatal. The cause of the incident is still being probed by the New York State Police, who are encouraging anyone with information or who witnessed the accident to assist in the ongoing investigation.
Ty Bridges, a neighbor, who saw Saunders entering the Prius on the night of the accident, shared his shock and sadness. He described Saunders as a lively and friendly teen, often seen with her red Buick, a car she was very proud of.
Youthful drivers on Long Island are exposed to heightened risks due to hazardous driving habits and complex road conditions. In 2023, Long Island saw its most lethal year for drivers aged 16 to 20, recording 32 fatal accidents, surpassing the previous record of 29 in 2015. Factors such as changes in driver’s education due to the pandemic, which led to limited in-car training, and a rise in speeding incidents have been linked to this worrying trend. The unique road conditions on Long Island, including twisting, tree-lined roads intended for slower speeds, add to the dangers for less experienced drivers.
In response to this shocking event, the community has united to support the grieving families. Local churches and organizations are providing counseling and support services. There are plans for a community vigil to remember Charles and Saunders, which will give family, friends, and community members an opportunity to honor their lives and share their memories.
