In a tragic incident in Douglas, Georgia a two-year-old boy, Nakyzi Odums, accidentally shot himself in a Walmart parking lot and later succumbed to his injuries. The incident took place on July 3, 2024 while his parents were shopping at a nearby fireworks stand.
According to witnesses, parents Sam Odums and Laileighauna Parks had just stepped out of their car to purchase fireworks when they heard a gunshot. Upon rushing back to their vehicle, they found their son Nakyzi with a gunshot wound to his chest. Nakyzi was immediately given medical aid and transported to a trauma center in Jacksonville, Florida. However, he could not survive the injury and passed away on July 6, 2024.
The Douglas Police Department issued a statement confirming the unfortunate incident, “The toddler who accidentally shot himself on July 3, 2024 tragically died this afternoon, July 6, 2024. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family during this challenging period.”
Chief of Douglas Police, Brannen Pruette, emphasized the significance of firearm safety, particularly in the presence of children. “You’re allowed to have a gun in the car, but when there’s a child involved, you need to make sure that the gun is secure so that the child doesn’t have access to it,” Pruette said. The investigation into how Nakyzi got hold of the firearm is ongoing.
Witnesses suggested that Nakyzi was seated in the front of the car and the gun might have been placed in the car door’s side pocket, within the reach of the toddler. The authorities are probing the incident to identify any parental negligence or oversight. It is yet to be determined whether the parents will be charged in connection with the incident.
The community has been deeply affected by the tragedy, with many expressing condolences and offering support to the family. In an effort to assist the grieving family with funeral expenses, a GoFundMe page was set up, where Nakyzi was described as a child who “smiled brightly, laughed wholeheartedly, and loved unconditionally.” The fundraiser has so far collected more than $3000, aiming to provide financial relief to the family. Nakyzi’s grandmother, in her appeal for donations, wrote, “As one of his grandmothers, I am stepping in and requesting support of burial for our sweet baby. Donations will also allow his mom and dad time to grieve properly. Please donate anything you desire if it’s in your heart and will.”
