A late-night shooting at a private club in Birmingham, Alabama on July 13, 2024 resulted in four fatalities and at least ten injuries, as reported by the Birmingham Police Department (BPD). The incident happened during a birthday party at a nightclub located at 3400 27th Street North.
North Precinct officers were called to the scene at 11:08 p.m. following reports of multiple gunshot victims. They found several individuals, both inside and outside the club, with gunshot injuries. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services (BFRS) was soon at the scene, declaring 39-year-old Stevie McGhee dead at the scene on the sidewalk.
Two women, 42-year-old Markeisha Gettings and 56-year-old Angela Weatherspoon, were found with gunshot injuries inside the club by BFRS and were both declared dead. As the area was secured, more victims with gunshot injuries started arriving at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital, transported by BFRS and private vehicles. Among these was 24-year-old Lerandus Anderson, who was later declared dead by medical staff at the hospital.
Officer Truman Fitzgerald of BPD reported that at least ten individuals were undergoing treatment at UAB Hospital for gunshot injuries, with conditions varying from stable to critical. Fitzgerald stated, “This senseless act of violence has shaken our community to its core. We are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety of our citizens.”
Initial investigations indicate that the shooting was the result of a disagreement at the birthday party inside the club. It is suspected that following the altercation, at least one person drove past the club and fired shots into the building. Detectives are working diligently to piece together the sequence of events and identify those involved.
This event marked the second shooting in Birmingham within a six-hour span. Earlier that evening, a separate shooting on Indian Summer Drive claimed three lives, including that of a young child, marking a particularly violent night in the city.
The BPD has appealed to the local community for assistance with their ongoing investigations. Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin stated, “We need swift justice for the victims and their families. The shooter or shooters deserve no safe harbor from their own family, friends, or strangers. Do not protect them.”
Anyone with pertinent information about either shooting has been asked to contact BPD at 205-254-1764 or call Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777 to remain anonymous. A reward of $5,000 has been announced for information leading to an arrest.
As the city grapples with the aftermath of these violent incidents, BPD maintains its commitment to restoring a sense of safety and security within the community.
Federal law enforcement agencies have been enlisted to assist the Birmingham police in their investigation. Their presence is intended to aid in a thorough and expedited resolution of this case.
