On Tuesday afternoon, July 2, 2024, a routine traffic stop in Pensacola, Florida ended in tragedy when a driver shot himself in the head as a police officer approached his vehicle. The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. at the intersection of I and Cervantes Streets.
The driver, whose identity has not been released, was initially pulled over for expired tags. Pensacola Police Department (PPD) spokesperson Mike Wood confirmed the details. Following the shooting, the victim was immediately transported to a nearby hospital but later died from his injuries.
Cervantes Street was closed off for a period while police investigated. The street was reopened shortly after the incident, allowing normal traffic to resume. The PPD is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the event and has not yet released further details.
In a similar incident, a traffic stop in West Fargo, North Dakota also ended in tragedy earlier this year. On February 11, 2024, West Fargo police conducted a felony traffic stop at the intersection of 26th Avenue South and Veterans Boulevard for probable cause related to a domestic dispute.
After officers initiated the stop, the passenger did not comply with the officer’s commands and got back into the vehicle, revealing a firearm and subsequently dying by suicide while officers were providing additional commands. This incident, like the one in Pensacola, highlights the critical need for mental health support and crisis intervention during police encounters.
