Esteemed South African actress Esta TerBlanche died unexpectedly at the age of 51 at her residence in North Hollywood, California. Her family confirmed her death on Thursday, July 18, 2024. The cause of TerBlanche’s death remains unknown and an autopsy is pending.
TerBlanche, who won the Miss Teen South Africa title in 1991, started her acting career in her native country with the soap opera “Egoli: Place of Gold.” She moved to American television in 1997 and achieved fame for her role as Princess Gillian Andrassy on “All My Children.” Her character’s untimely exit in 2001 disappointed fans, although she made a brief return in the show’s final season in 2011.
TerBlanche’s goddaughter Barbie Ashley confirmed that her godmother’s body was found in her home a day after her death. “It was a shock to all of us,” Ashley said. “She was full of life and had so many plans.”
The actress’s publicist, Lisa Rodrigo, said they had no further information regarding the cause of TerBlanche’s death. “Esta was a beautiful soul, both inside and out,” Rodrigo said. “Her loss is deeply felt by everyone who knew her.”
TerBlanche’s career in the U.S. started when she relocated there in 1995. In a 2021 interview, she reflected on her move as intimidating, yet a fulfillment of her dream. “I always wanted to act in America, and ‘All My Children’ gave me that opportunity,” she said.
During her stint on “All My Children,” TerBlanche worked with several high-profile actors, including Cameron Mathison, her on-screen love interest. Mathison paid homage to TerBlanche on social media, praising her kindness and professionalism. “Esta was one of the sweetest people I’ve ever worked with,” Mathison wrote. “Her smile could light up a room.”
After leaving “All My Children,” TerBlanche returned to South Africa and continued to contribute to the entertainment industry. She starred in various TV shows, hosted programs, and engaged in charitable work. Her manager, Annie Spoliansky, described her as a “kind, loving, and giving person” with a passion for helping others.
Beyond her work in entertainment, TerBlanche was deeply involved in animal rescue. She frequently expressed her love for animals on social media, posting pictures of her pets and promoting the adoption of rescue animals. “She had a heart for animals and was always caring for stray cats and dogs,” Spoliansky said.
The soap opera community has suffered several losses recently including actors Doug Sheehan, Alec Musser, and Johnny Wactor. TerBlanche’s sudden death has left her fans and colleagues in mourning.
A spokesperson for “All My Children” described TerBlanche as a cherished member of their family. “Her portrayal of Gillian Andrassy was iconic, and she will be remembered for her talent and warmth,” they said.
