“Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak, after 41 seasons, retired from the popular game show and made his last appearance on Friday, June 7. However, Sajak is not disappearing from the public’s view. He has shifted his career to a new phase by taking on a lead role in the crime play “Prescription: Murder,” set in Honolulu, Hawaii. Details of his next move have been shared.
The show is scheduled to start next summer at the Hawaii Theater, a historic venue in the state. “Prescription: Murder” will see Sajak undertaking a dramatic shift from his familiar television image as he takes on the role of a smart psychiatrist tangled in a dark conspiracy. The play, which served as the foundation for the legendary detective series “Columbo,” is anticipated to engage viewers with its tense chase sequences.
Sajak will be working with his longtime associate Joe Moore, a well-known newscaster for Hawaii’s KHON-TV. Their collaboration at Hawaii Theatre has a history of over 30 years, including notable productions such as “The Odd Couple” and “The Honeymooners.” In a recent discussion, Sajak mentioned, “Joe and I have a special chemistry on stage that we hope brings a fresh energy to this classic thriller.”
The play will be staged from July 31 to August 10, 2025, giving fans ample opportunities to experience Sajak’s theatrical talents. The storyline revolves around Sajak’s character, Dr. Roy Flemming, who designs a clever alibi to get rid of his domineering wife, played by Amy K. Sullivan. As the narrative unfolds, Moore’s character, Lt. Columbo, starts to expose Flemming’s plot, culminating in a gripping finale.
The cast also includes local actors such as Bryce Moore, Therese Olival, and Aiko Chinen, offering a mix of experienced and fresh talents. Rob Duval is directing the production, with a goal to present an engaging reinterpretation of this classic mystery.
Despite leaving “Wheel of Fortune,” Sajak seems content with his decision. He expressed his feelings by saying, “It’s a perfect time for a change. Hosting has been a significant part of my life, but I’m excited about returning to my first love—theater,” and humorously stated that he is now “patiently waiting for grandkids.”
With Sajak’s departure, Ryan Seacrest is set to take over in September 2024 as the host of “Wheel of Fortune.” Acknowledging the importance of his new role, Seacrest stated, “Stepping into Pat’s shoes is an immense honor. I look forward to continuing the show’s legacy and hope to bring my own flavor to it.”
Sajak’s shift from a television game show host to a stage actor underlines a broader story of transformation and artistic exploration. His new role not only offers him a platform to showcase his theatrical skills but also reconnects him with his early roots in drama.
