Celebrity Doctor Disappears on Hike

On June 9, authorities in Greece found the body of Dr. Michael Mosley, a well-known British television doctor and diet expert, who disappeared on the island of Symi on June 5, 2024. The 67-year-old was reported missing by his wife, Dr. Clare Bailey, after he failed to return from a hike.

Mosley was discovered among rocks along a rough coastline by a group on a boat that included the local mayor and reporters.

Mosley’s wife explained that her husband had taken the wrong path during a hike and collapsed just before reaching a marina, in a location where his body was not easily visible.

Michael was an adventurous man, which was one of the things that made him so unique, Dr. Clare Bailey Mosley said in a statement. “Losing Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind, and brilliant husband, is heartbreaking. We shared an incredibly fortunate life together, loved each other deeply, and were very happy.”

Mosley, a prominent figure in the UK for his diet and health advice, set off on a hike from St. Nicholas Beach at around 1:30 p.m. His disappearance was reported later that evening when he did not return, prompting immediate search and rescue operations involving local police, firefighters, coast guard personnel, and volunteers.

The search area included the path between Agios Nikolaos Beach and the village of Pedi, where Mosley was last seen. CCTV footage from a cafe in Pedi captured his last known sighting around 20 minutes after he left the beach. Authorities noted that the terrain was challenging and temperatures soared to 104°F on the day he went missing.

Michael Mosley was best known for his work on popular diets such as the Fast 800 and the 5:2 diet, and for his numerous television programs, including the BBC series “Trust Me, I’m a Doctor.” He also authored several books on diet and health and was a prominent health columnist for the Daily Mail.

Mosley frequently subjected his body to extreme conditions to observe the impact of his diets. He even lived with tapeworms in his intestines for six weeks for the BBC documentary “Infested! Living With Parasites.”

Clare Bailey Mosley expressed her gratitude to the people of Symi Island, acknowledging their relentless efforts to locate her husband.
