A 16-year-old American girl died after falling more than 300 feet while hiking with her friend and the friend’s family in Switzerland. The incident occurred on the morning of June 9, 2024, on the popular “Gorges Mystérieuses” trail in the Tête-Noire gorge near the Trient River.
Authorities in Valais, Switzerland, reported that the teenager, whose identity has not been released, stumbled and fell about 328 feet down an embankment. The fall happened around 10:30 a.m. local time, and despite the swift response of two helicopter crews and regional rescue teams, the girl was found lifeless in a riverbed below the trail.
According to the police, the friend’s father attempted to rescue her but became stuck on a rock wall. He was eventually rescued and was unharmed. The police have investigated the circumstances leading to the girl’s fall.
The U.S. Embassy in Switzerland and Liechtenstein confirmed the death of the American citizen. “We mourn with the family who lost a loved one on June 9, 2024, in Valais, Switzerland,” said a spokesperson for the embassy. “Out of respect to the family during this difficult time, we have no further comment.”
The “Gorges Mystérieuses” trail, established in 1884, is known for its scenic views, including waterfalls and the Grotte aux Nymphes, a hidden grotto described as an “authentic natural cathedral.” The trail descends approximately three-quarters of a mile to the bottom of the gorge and includes a series of stone steps and footbridges. It is popular among international hikers, although it is unsuitable for visitors with physical disabilities.
The area has seen previous incidents involving American tourists. In April, a 15-year-old American boy died in an avalanche near the Swiss Alpine ski resort of Zermatt, along with two other people. A 20-year-old Swiss man was seriously injured in that incident.
This accident highlights the need for caution while hiking, even on well-traveled paths. Hiking can be rewarding but risky, particularly in rugged terrains like the Swiss Alps. Hikers are advised to stay on marked trails, wear appropriate footwear, and remain vigilant.
The Tête-Noire gorge remains popular, attracting worldwide hikers seeking its natural beauty and historical significance. The trail connects Martigny in Switzerland and Chamonix in France, serving as an international trade route for centuries.
