On Friday, May 31, 2024, the bodies of Cynthia “Cindy” Roberson Gobble, 60, and Gregory Wayne Gobble, 59, were discovered in a forested region of Iredell County, North Carolina. The couple had been reported missing, leading to a comprehensive search initiated by an Ashanti Alert issued for Cynthia.
The case investigation started on Thursday evening when Cynthia’s family asked for a welfare check at her home in Mocksville, North Carolina. Upon arriving, Davie County Sheriff’s Office deputies found the house deserted. Cynthia’s purse, wallet, and insulin were left behind, suggesting an involuntary departure.
Given Cynthia’s ongoing separation and divorce proceedings against Gregory, authorities immediately suspected foul play. The couple’s family reported that they had not been able to reach them since late Wednesday afternoon. The search for the Gobbles was stepped up, with deputies thoroughly checking known locations. Gregory was soon considered a person of interest, and the investigation focused on his white Ford truck.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a call on Friday about two bodies found near Sheffield Road, just beyond the Iredell-Davie County border. The bodies were identified as those of Cynthia and Gregory. Both had been shot, and the presumed murder weapon was found in close proximity.
Evidence gathered at the scene suggested that Gregory had murdered Cynthia before ending his own life. Davie County Sheriff J.D. Hartman stated, “It’s a tragic end to a very concerning case. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones affected by this incident.”
Cynthia had recently sought legal separation, alleging cyberstalking and that Gregory had installed a tracking device on her vehicle. Court papers also detailed Gregory’s erratic and violent behavior, his attempts to alienate Cynthia from her family, and his refusal to work or contribute to household expenses after their 2012 marriage and his move into the home she had shared with her late former husband. The court had granted Cynthia sole ownership of their shared residence. The abrupt disappearance of the couple and the subsequent discovery of their bodies have stunned the local community.
Cynthia’s son expressed his deep sorrow on social media and shared his struggle to comprehend the loss of his mother. He wrote, “I’m trying to process what happened, but it all seems like a nightmare until I realize I’ll never be able to tell my Mom I love her again.”
The case has been closed by the authorities, who have assured that there is no ongoing threat to the public and that no other suspects were involved. However, they are looking for more information regarding the couple’s movements between Wednesday and Thursday.
The Davie County Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information to come forward.
