Drew Gordon, former NBA player and older brother of Denver Nuggets’ Aaron Gordon, tragically lost his life in a car accident on Thursday, May 30, 2024, in Portland, Oregon, as confirmed by his agent Calvin Andrews. He was 33.
Gordon was born in San Jose, California, and made a significant name for himself in the basketball world at Archbishop Mitty High School. His impressive performance there led him to be placed among the top 50 of the class of 2008. His talent and commitment to the sport earned him a position at UCLA, and later a transfer to New Mexico further reinforced his reputation as a strong player.
Starting his college basketball career at UCLA, Gordon was a sought-after player by top programs such as Duke, North Carolina, and Arizona. However, he eventually chose UCLA and then transferred to the University of New Mexico after two seasons.
During his time at New Mexico, he averaged over 13 points and 10 rebounds per game, which attracted the attention of the NBA and other professional leagues. His impact was notable in his senior year as he led the Mountain West in rebounding with an average of 11.1 per game. He also made significant contributions to the Lobos’ Mountain West Championship and their advancement to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Despite his achievements in college, Gordon did not get drafted during the 2012 NBA Draft. However, his performance with the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Summer League opened up multiple professional opportunities. He had brief stints in the G League and various international leagues, with his only NBA tenure being with the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2014-15 season.
Over nearly a decade, Gordon played professional basketball in countries including Italy, France, Turkey, Japan, Serbia, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, and Russia. A significant highlight of his international career was his All-Star recognition in France in 2015 while playing for Champagne Châlons-Reims.
Gordon retired from professional basketball in 2023, leaving behind a legacy of international success and unwavering determination.
The basketball community and Gordon’s family and friends mourn his untimely loss. He is survived by his wife, Angela, their three children, and his younger brother, Denver Nuggets player Aaron Gordon, who is well-known for his athletic prowess and impressive dunks.
“Drew was more than just a brother to me,” Aaron Gordon stated. “He was my role model and my biggest supporter. Words can’t express how much he will be missed.”
The Denver Nuggets organization conveyed their condolences, remarking, “Drew left this world far too soon, but his legacy will endure through his three wonderful children and all his loved ones.”
