Disneyland Employee Dies at Work in Freak Accident

In an unfortunate event at Disneyland Resort, Anaheim, California, a veteran employee, Bonnye Mavis Lear, lost her life when she fell off a moving golf cart. The mishap occurred backstage at the amusement park on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, at around 11:30 a.m. PST. Emergency services were promptly alerted and dispatched to the location.

A resident of Fullerton, Lear, aged 60, had been associated with Disneyland for 24 years. Her latest role was in providing member services at Club 33, a private dining club located in the New Orleans Square section of the park. Club 33, launched in 1967, was inspired by executive VIP lounges showcased at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. The club is situated above the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

On the day of the accident, Lear was seated in the rear-facing seat of the golf cart with three other occupants. The golf cart was moving at an approximate speed of 20 mph when it experienced a bump or dip in the road. Lear attempted to secure herself by gripping the handrail, which unfortunately gave way, resulting in her fall. She suffered a skull fracture and brain swelling due to the fall, and was rushed to a local hospital in a critical state. Despite medical interventions, Lear succumbed to her injuries two days later.

The president of Disneyland Resort, Ken Potrock, expressed his grief over Lear’s demise, stating, “We are devastated by Bonnye’s passing and extend our deepest sympathies to all who knew her. Our priority now is to support her family and our staff during this difficult time, ensuring they have the necessary resources.”

The Anaheim Police Department has initiated an investigation into the circumstances that led to the accident. Some co-workers, including Disney California Adventure Attractions cast member Rae Delgado, have accused Disneyland management of pressuring staff to maintain silence about the details surrounding Lear’s death. Delgado shared details of the incident on Facebook, highlighting that the accident could have been averted if the golf cart was not driven negligently.

Those who knew Lear, including her co-workers and friends, have offered their condolences and remembered her for her commitment and contributions to the Disneyland community. They described Lear as “one of the kindest people you would meet.”

This unfortunate event is not the first of its kind at Disney theme parks. Over the years, both Disneyland and Disney World have experienced several fatal accidents that have involved both guests and employees. Some of the notable incidents include the death of a monorail pilot in 2009, and a four-year-old boy who collapsed on the Mission: Space ride in 2005; among other accidents involving rides and attractions. These incidents underscore the persistent safety challenges that Disney theme parks encounter while managing their extensive operations and ensuring the safety of millions of annual visitors.

As the investigation is underway, the Disneyland Resort community is mourning the loss of a valued and loved member.
