On Sunday, June 2, 2024, in the early morning hours, a block party in Akron, Ohio was disrupted by a mass shooting. The incident, which took place near Kelly Avenue and 8th Avenue around midnight, resulted in one death and 25 injuries.
The local police department in Akron was alerted to the incident through numerous 911 calls about gunfire. At the same time, several local hospitals began treating a significant number of gunshot victims, highlighting the extent of the incident. The police have identified the deceased as Lateris Cook, a 27-year-old man. The ages of those wounded range from 19 to 43.
The party had been attended by approximately 200 people earlier in the evening, many of whom had left when the police were initially called. However, around midnight, about 100 people had returned. Police suspect that the gunfire was initiated from a moving vehicle, with some partygoers returning fire.
Witnesses recounted a scene of pandemonium that had abruptly interrupted a sizable and vibrant birthday celebration. Jehovah Jones, a local resident, spoke of the sudden onset of violence: “We just heard like fireworks. I thought it was the Fourth of July. Then I saw cars, and I saw everybody running. I was petrified. I was scared for my life. I got kids. What if that would have been me?”
Joyoux Payne, another witness, expressed confusion at the sudden eruption of violence amidst a peaceful gathering: “We’re outside, enjoying ourselves, and the next thing you know, we’re running for our lives. That fast. A lot of people out there, but there wasn’t no drama, no commotion, no fighting. Nothing. I don’t know why. We were all just out here having fun, we’re all dancin’, everybody listening to music and next thing you know, the gunshots went off as we’re all dancing, as we’re all enjoying ourselves, there’s bullets ringing out. How? Why? That fast.”
Police have so far retrieved one firearm and numerous bullet casings from the scene. However, no individuals have been arrested yet, and the motive behind the shooting is still unclear. As the investigation is in its early stages, authorities are appealing to anyone with information to step forward.
In a joint statement, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik and Police Chief Brian Harding shared the city’s grief and commitment to resolving the case. “Today, our city is grappling with the aftermath of senseless violence. With over two dozen victims, the pain and trauma affect all of Akron as we seek answers. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families,” they said. “We are committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and need the community’s help. If you have any information about this tragic shooting, please come forward. You can do so anonymously to help prevent further violence and retaliation.”
The Akron Police Department is asking anyone with knowledge about the shooting to reach out to their Detective Bureau.
