1 Dead, 1 Injured In Campus Shooting

In a rare and alarming incident, a deadly shooting occurred at the University of Panama’s Veraguas Regional College in Santiago, approximately 155 miles southwest of Panama City, on Friday, June 7, 2024, resulting in the death of one student and the injury of another.

Two unidentified gunmen arrived at the campus in a vehicle and opened fire on a group of six first-year agricultural science students working on a project. Veraguas police chief Hector Delgado stated, “Two individuals exited a vehicle and began shooting at a group on campus, catching the students by surprise.”

The attack claimed the life of 27-year-old Alvaro Leones, described by University President Eduardo Flores as “an outstanding member of our university community.” Flores added, “His tragic departure represents an irreparable loss for our institution.” Anel Terreros, another student, was injured in the attack and taken to the hospital for treatment.

Shootings at educational institutions in Panama are extremely rare, leaving the university community in shock. The administration responded swiftly by suspending administrative work and classes, condemning the violence, and offering support to the affected families. In a statement, the university extended condolences to Leones’ friends and family.

Pedro Samaniego, the director of the Veraguas Regional College, expressed his grief, saying, “We have no information about the shooters, except that they entered and opened fire on the student. The students fled, and one was shot in the buttocks.” The chaotic scene left students and faculty members in fear and disbelief.

An investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. As of now, no arrests have been made. A law enforcement official, speaking anonymously, mentioned that the police are diligently gathering information to find the assailants. Prosecutor Hector Navarro confirmed that no suspects had been identified, but efforts are ongoing to solve the case.

The regional prosecutor’s office released a statement via social media, acknowledging the severity of the incident and assuring the public that a thorough investigation is underway. The university community remains united in their grief and determination to seek justice for Alvaro Leones and support Anel Terreros in his recovery.

The shooting at the University of Panama has brought attention to the rare but serious occurrence of violence in educational institutions. The university community mourns the loss of a promising student and supports the recovery of another.
