Soap Opera Actress Dead at 85

On April 25, 2024, Marla Adams, a respected figure in daytime television in America, died at the age of 85 in Los Angeles, California.

Adams was known for her role as Dina Abbott Mergeron in CBS’ “The Young and the Restless,” a part she played for over six decades, leaving an indelible mark on viewers and colleagues alike.

Born on August 28, 1938, in Ocean City, New Jersey, she displayed early signs of star potential, winning the title of Miss Diamond Jubilee during her hometown’s 75th-anniversary festivities in 1954.

Following her graduation from The American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Adams embarked on an acting career that saw her take on various roles in theater and television. She first assumed the role of Dina Mergeron in 1982, and although she left when her initial contract expired, she made several guest appearances before rejoining the cast on a regular basis in 2017.

Adams’ portrayal of Dina Mergeron was highly regarded. Her depiction of the character, embroiled in familial conflicts and later grappling with Alzheimer’s, struck a chord with viewers. Her nuanced understanding of the character’s challenges made Dina one of the most notable characters in daytime television. This role, which she played with authenticity and depth, led to her receiving an Emmy in 2020.

News of Adams’ death was met with a flood of tributes from fellow actors and fans. Josh Griffith, executive producer and head writer of “The Young and the Restless,” summed up the sentiments, saying, “We’re so grateful and in awe of Marla’s incredible performance as Dina Mergeron as both Marla and Dina made an unforgettable mark on the show.”

Throughout her career, Adams also featured in other prominent shows such as “Gunsmoke,” “The Twilight Zone,” and “The Secret Storm.” She guest-starred on series like “The Love Boat” and “Harry O.”

Off-screen, Adams was recognized for her philanthropic work, especially in the areas of animal rights and environmental conservation.

The professional legacy left by Marla Adams, as well as the strong relationships she built with her co-stars and fans, are being celebrated as her death is mourned. Her family, friends, and an extended network of colleagues remember her for the lasting mark she made on the entertainment industry.
