Pat Sajak Bids Farewell to “Wheel of Fortune” Fans

Pat Sajak, the host of “Wheel of Fortune” for an impressive 41 seasons and 43 years, is set to retire. The final episodes featuring Sajak have already been recorded, with his last show set to be broadcast on June 7, 2024. This marks the end of an era for the iconic game show as Sajak departs from his long-held role.

Last year, Sajak, who is now 77, announced his retirement. He expressed his gratitude for the journey, stating, “Well, the time has come. I’ve decided that our 41st season, which starts in September, will be my last. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’ll share more details in the upcoming months. Thank you all so much.”

Beginning in 1981, Pat Sajak began hosting “Wheel of Fortune” when the show was still a daytime television program. His co-host, Vanna White, 67, joined him a year later. The show transitioned to nighttime in 1983, quickly becoming one of the highest-rated syndicated TV programs. Sajak and White have since become household names, entertaining millions of viewers throughout the years.

Reflecting on his career, Sajak noted, “The great thing about working in local TV in LA is that the key decision-makers watch you every night.” His visibility played a crucial role in Merv Griffin, the creator of “Wheel of Fortune,” choosing him to take over from original host Chuck Woolery.

As Sajak prepares to step down, the show’s future is secure. Vanna White will continue in her co-host role, and Ryan Seacrest, 49, known for hosting “American Idol,” has been announced as Sajak’s successor. Seacrest voiced his respect and excitement about following Sajak’s legacy. “I am incredibly honored to follow in the footsteps of the iconic Pat Sajak. Like many Americans, I’ve found it a privilege and a joy to watch Pat and Vanna on TV for an amazing 40 years, bringing smiles to our faces and making us feel at home,” Seacrest stated.

White’s contract will continue through the 2025-2026 season, ensuring her presence on the show for at least two more years. When White is unable to attend, Sajak’s daughter, Maggie, will occasionally step in. White expressed her confidence in Maggie’s abilities, saying, “I think she’s a good replacement if I can’t be there for some reason. She’s been around it her whole life, so I think she can definitely fill in for me.”

The final week of shows featuring Sajak will be themed “Thanks for the Memories,” in honor of his lengthy tenure. The producers have chosen some of his most humorous moments to be aired during these episodes, providing a nostalgic experience for long-time fans.

Following his departure from “Wheel of Fortune,” Sajak has plans to remain as chairman of the Board of Trustees for Hillsdale College in Michigan. Sajak has been a board member for many years and looks forward to continuing his involvement with the institution.

As Sajak’s final episode approaches, fans and colleagues are preparing to bid him a fond farewell. His contributions to the success of the show have been significant. One producer stated, “Pat’s ability to connect with contestants and audiences alike is unmatched. His humor, warmth, and consistency have been the cornerstone of ‘Wheel of Fortune’ for over four decades.”

Recognizing the importance of his new role, Ryan Seacrest added, “It’s an honor to continue the legacy that Pat has built. I’m looking forward to bringing my style to the show while respecting the traditions that have made ‘Wheel of Fortune’ a beloved part of American culture.”
