Last week in Southern California, a devastating car accident claimed the lives of a woman who previously worked on Obama’s campaign and her spouse.
Peggy Moore, 60, and her wife, Hope Wood, 48, were killed in a car accident on Friday, May 10, 2024. The collision occurred on Highway 76 near Fallbrook, about 55 miles north of San Diego, when the Jeep pickup they were in collided with a Chrysler sedan.
The 60-year-old man driving the Jeep and the person operating the Chrysler were also declared dead at the scene. A third passenger in the Jeep survived the accident.
The medical examiner initially identified only Moore among the deceased, but later, online tributes revealed the loss of both Moore and Wood.
The couple, residing in the Bay Area, met while working on Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. In 2019, they founded Hope Action Change, a consultancy promoting diversity and equity.
In a statement, California House of Representatives member Barbara Lee commended the couple’s unwavering dedication to social justice, noting their ability to inspire change and foster a more inclusive society. “Their impact will resonate throughout our community and beyond for years to come,” Lee said.
According to her LinkedIn profile, Moore’s career included managing the campaign for former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaff and serving as a senior adviser in Schaff’s office from 2015 through 2017. Moore was also a general consultant in Diana Becton’s campaign for Contra Costa County district attorney.
Reflecting on Moore’s character, Mayor Schaff spoke with the local media about her remarkable ability to connect with people. “You could not walk anywhere with Peggy without it taking two hours,” Schaff noted, emphasizing Moore’s deep involvement in politics and her focus on creating connections among diverse groups.
It is a comfort to the couple’s friends and family, to know that Moore and Wood died instantly and together without suffering, Schaff mentioned.
