Man Kills Wife By Burying Her Alive

David Pagniano, 62, was sentenced on May 9, 2024, to life in prison without parole for the brutal murder of his estranged wife, Sandra Pagniano, in 2017.

Sandra Pagniano, 39, was in the process of divorcing her husband when she was abducted from her home, bound, gagged, and buried alive in a secluded area roughly 10 miles from her residence.

The Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office began investigating after her suspicious disappearance around May 19, 2017, amid the contentious divorce. Using cell phone data and cadaver dogs, authorities located the gravesite in Prescott, Arizona a week later. Sandra’s body was discovered wrapped in packing tape, and forensic analysis showed she had been alive for up to five minutes after being buried.

“The death penalty was sought in this case due to the appalling circumstances of the abduction and murder of a young mother,” said Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane. “Sandra was taken while her children were asleep, bound with packing tape, transported to a secluded area, and buried alive.”

The investigation also revealed two notes allegedly written by Sandra, claiming she was leaving and granting David full custody of their children and ownership of her vehicles and house. Forensic analysis, however, determined that these notes were actually penned by David Pagniano himself.

David Pagniano initially faced charges of second-degree murder but later pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, kidnapping, and forgery. His sentencing included an additional 16.5 years for the kidnapping, fraud schemes, and forgery charges.

The Sheriff’s Office detailed Sandra’s final moments, noting, “The evidence showed that she fought desperately while in the grave and was likely conscious for up to five minutes after being buried.”

During the sentencing, McGrane expressed hope that the life sentence would provide some closure to Sandra’s family, especially her two daughters, ages 12 and 8, at the time of their mother’s murder, who were asleep in the home during the kidnapping.
