A family of five from Eagle Pass, Texas lost their lives in a crash on Tuesday night, May 28, 2024. The accident happened around 8 p.m. on U.S. Highway 57, nine miles east of Eagle Pass.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the family was traveling westbound in a gray 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV when a 2019 Ford Fedex box truck traveling eastbound veered into their lane, causing a head-on collision. The crash resulted in the death of the SUV’s driver, Joanna Martinez, 34, along with her passengers: 25-year-old Samantha Martinez, 61-year-old Noemi Jimenez Martinez, and 71-year-old Jose Martinez. Additionally, a ten-year-old girl, whose name has not been disclosed, died while being transported to Fort Duncan Medical Center.
“Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this accident, and we offer our sincerest condolences to the families and friends grieving their loved ones,” said a spokesperson for FedEx. “Safety remains our top priority, and we will fully cooperate with the authorities during their investigation.”
The driver of the FedEx truck was injured and transported to the hospital. The extent of his injuries has not been disclosed.
Texas DPS troopers are investigating the crash. Early reports suggest the FedEx truck failed to maintain its lane, leading to the collision. Investigators are considering whether factors such as driver impairment, distraction, or vehicle malfunction played a role.
A family friend described the victims as a close-knit family. “They were always together and supporting each other,” the friend said. “It’s hard to believe they’re gone.”
The community of Eagle Pass is in mourning as friends and neighbors grapple with the sudden loss. Residents have expressed their shock and sadness, noting the profound impact on the community.
The Texas DPS has emphasized the importance of road safety in light of the accident. “Accidents like this highlight the importance of safe driving practices,” said Texas Highway Patrol Staff Sergeant Rene Cordova. “We must all do our part to ensure the safety of ourselves and others on the road.”
Fundraisers and memorials are being organized to honor the lost lives and help with funeral expenses.
