In the early hours of Sunday, May 26, 2024, a collision between a passenger bus and a cargo train in central Peru resulted in the deaths of four people and injuries to more than 30 others. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. in the district of La Oroya, approximately 110 miles east of Lima, the country’s capital.
Peru’s national police reported that the Ministry of Transportation and Communications is investigating the cause of the accident. The train and the bus, which were privately operated, had the necessary permits. The injured were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The names of the deceased have not been released but they were reported to be between 25-35 years old.
Highway Police Commander Justo Venero told Radio Programas del Perú (RPP) radio station that the area where the crash occurred has a speed limit and train-crossing road signs. Venero mentioned that the train’s driver reported that its “audible and visible signals” were active during the collision when the bus tried to overtake the train; when it couldn’t the train slammed into the back of the bus. Police released images showing the overturned bus on the Central Highway.
The bus, operated by Apocalipsis, had departed Lima and was en route to the city of Huancayo.
The Ministry said in a statement, “We are committed to ensuring the safety of our transportation systems and will take all necessary measures to investigate this incident thoroughly.” Local authorities echoed this sentiment and pledged full cooperation with the investigation.
The swift response from emergency services highlighted the community’s resilience, but the collision has raised questions about transportation safety in the region. Concerns have been voiced regarding the effectiveness of safety measures at train crossings, particularly in remote areas.
For now, the focus remains on providing support to the injured and the families of those who lost their lives. Counseling services have been made available to help them cope with the emotional aftermath of the event.
