A bus crash on a highway in southern Turkey has killed 10 people and injured 39 others. The incident occurred late Sunday night, May 26, 2024 in Mersin province, where a passenger bus collided with two cars and a truck amid heavy rain.
The bus, traveling from Diyarbakir to Adana, veered into the opposite lane due to the inclement weather, causing the initial collision with two cars. Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan reported that a truck subsequently slammed into the wreckage. Emergency rescue teams quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured and manage the chaos.
According to the state-run Anadolu Agency, the injured were swiftly transported to nearby hospitals, with at least eight individuals in critical condition. The emergency response involved numerous ambulances, police, and fire engines working together to rescue and aid the victims.
Images from the scene show the mangled remains of the vehicles involved. The front of the yellow bus was crushed, and the truck was heavily damaged, its front end almost entirely obliterated. Pieces of the wreckage were scattered across the highway, making the rescue efforts even more challenging.
The crash occurred in the Yenice district, a busy area connecting various southern Turkey regions. The highway, often bustling with intercity traffic, became a scene of tragedy and confusion.
Authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the accident. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya expressed his condolences and promised a comprehensive inquiry. “According to initial findings, unfortunately, 10 of our citizens lost their lives, and 39 were injured,” Yerlikaya stated. “We are committed to understanding how this happened and preventing such incidents in the future.”
The bus was reportedly carrying 28 passengers when the accident took place. Heavy rain has been a significant factor in road accidents in the region, often causing reduced visibility and slippery roads.
The highway has since been cleared, but the scars of the tragedy remain. The government’s response and the findings of the ongoing investigation will be crucial in addressing the safety concerns and preventing future tragedies on Turkey’s highways.
