Early on a quiet Tuesday morning, April 16, 2024, the upscale neighborhood of Newport Beach, California was jolted by a violent home invasion that ended with a deadly shootout and a suspected intruder’s suicide.
The incident occurred in the gated community near Newport Coast Drive and Pelican Hill Road North, bringing an unexpected wave of violence to what is typically a serene area.
At approximately 4:45 a.m., Newport Beach Police responded to a 911 call from a resident reporting that they had shot an intruder inside their home. Upon arrival, officers discovered one suspect in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and later, a second suspect was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in nearby bushes.
The home, occupied by four people at the time — a man, two women, and a child — was the scene of a dramatic confrontation that appeared to stem from a prior interaction between the parties involved. “The crime appears to be a targeted incident involving a prior connection between the suspects and victims,” a police statement indicated, hinting at a deeper backstory to the break-in.
“The initial investigation suggests that the suspects and the victims were not strangers to each other,” explained Sgt. Steve Oberon of the Newport Beach Police Department.
