A local man, reportedly in his 30s, met a fatal end on the evening of April 7 while attempting to rescue his escaped dogs on a bustling section of Interstate 10 near Dietrich Road in San Antonio, Texas, as confirmed by police reports.
The incident, which occurred around 10:00 p.m. local time, unfolded after the man’s recreational vehicle began experiencing mechanical issues, prompting him to pull over on the highway’s right shoulder.
According to eyewitness accounts and police statements, the man’s efforts to secure his two dogs, which had managed to escape from the vehicle, led him onto the perilous lanes of the interstate.
He successfully caught one of the dogs but was struck by a commercial propane truck during his attempt to return to his vehicle. The truck’s driver stopped immediately to offer assistance, but despite these efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The dog in the man’s possession at the time of the accident suffered severe injuries, including multiple injuries to its chest and left leg, as detailed by local Animal Care Services. The second dog fortunately did not sustain any harm. Efforts are underway by Animal Care Services to place the dogs with the victim’s family, ensuring they are cared for following the incident.
Raw footage from the scene displayed the aftermath of the tragedy, including the man’s RV with an open hood and a crooked license plate, and a single shoe lying in the middle of the road. Workers from the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services were also seen removing one of the dogs from the vicinity, highlighting the immediate response by local authorities.
The identity of the man has yet to be disclosed as officials await notification of next of kin. The San Antonio Police Department has not released any information regarding potential charges against the truck driver, indicating that the investigation into the precise circumstances of the incident is ongoing.
This distressing event serves as a grim reminder of the unpredictability of accidents on highways, especially under circumstances where animals are involved. The American Kennel Club advises against chasing after escaped dogs, suggesting instead that owners remain calm and walk quickly, keeping them in sight; running can lead to dangerous outcomes for both the pets and their owners.
