2 Killed, 7 Wounded in Shooting Spree

A devastating outbreak of gun violence struck Washington, D.C., Wednesday evening, April 10, 2024, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries, including young children. Over a span of less than five hours, the community reeled from the rapid succession of shootings that unfolded across several neighborhoods.

The violence began around 6:10 p.m. in the Carver Langston neighborhood, a typically quiet area thrust into chaos. Police arrived at the 1100 block of 21st Street NE to discover a tragic scene: 29-year-old Aubrey McLeod from Largo, Maryland, was found dead. Nearby, two other men, a woman and a nine-year-old boy, were found with injuries, thankfully not life-threatening. In a particularly heartbreaking twist, a 12-year-old boy later walked into a nearby hospital by himself, also suffering from gunshot wounds incurred during the same incident. Investigators believe that the suspects got out of their vehicle and started firing into a crowd on the street.

As the night progressed, more shootings painted a similar picture of terror. At approximately 9:15 p.m., officers responded to another call on the 3500 block of 10th Street NW. They found a man seriously wounded, who was quickly transported to a hospital. Tragically, a second victim from this incident later died from their injuries after arriving at a hospital independently.

Shortly before 11 p.m., yet another shooting was reported on the 1800 block of Benning Road NW. Emergency services transported a wounded man to the hospital, increasing the tally of those impacted by the night’s events. Authorities are currently searching for two suspects, reportedly operating a moped, believed to be connected to this spate of violence.

Community leaders and residents call for action in the wake of these events. A local father who has lost three sons to gun violence voiced a desperate plea for help, emphasizing the need for more than just thoughts and prayers. “We need help,” he said in an interview, a sentiment echoed by many in the community who are tired of witnessing such acts of violence disrupt their lives.

The district’s police department has responded by stepping up patrols and releasing images of a vehicle suspected in at least one of the incidents, hoping to apprehend those responsible for the violence. As investigators work tirelessly to piece together the events, the community remains on edge, mourning the lost and rallying around the survivors.

The District of Columbia experienced a significant uptick in violent crime last year, with rates climbing by 39%. This surge included a notable 35% increase in homicides and a substantial rise in carjackings, which almost doubled. Amidst this backdrop, legislative efforts have been intensified by local authorities to impose stricter penalties for gun-related offenses in the capital.
