David Hanbury, 37, an associate professor of psychology at Averett University in Danville, Virginia, was found dead in Orlando, Florida on Saturday, March 16, 2024, after being reported missing.
Hanbury, a respected member of the Averett community known for his contributions to psychology, had been attending the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference near Universal Studios.
The Orlando Police Department reported that it responded to an unattended death at Club Orlando, a private men’s club near the city center, where Hanbury’s body was discovered. Although the specific cause and location of Hanbury’s death were not disclosed, police indicated that the circumstances did not appear suspicious. The investigation awaits the coroner’s report from the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office.
David’s brother JJ Hanbury posted that his brother was not a “partier.” He became concerned when David did not call their mother, whom he usually spoke to several times a day, and when JJ called him, the call went to voice mail. David had also missed a scheduled speech at the conference, alarming his colleagues.
Averett University, a private Baptist college, announced Hanbury’s death in a statement from President Tiffany Franks. The university acknowledged his significant impact since joining the faculty in 2015. Hanbury was co-chair of the psychology department and chair of the Division of Physical and Psychological Health Sciences. He was honored with the Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year award for 2022-2023.
In tribute to Hanbury’s memory, Averett University has planned a vigil to allow faculty, students, and the community to reflect on his profound influence. President Franks emphasized the collective grief and the support system within the Averett community during this difficult time.
