A celebratory event at Six Flags Over Georgia in Austell, Georgia, on Saturday, March 3, 2024, descended into chaos following a shooting incident that left a 15-year-old boy critically injured. The incident occurred during the amusement park’s opening weekend.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Cobb County Police Department (CCPD) was called to control a crowd of approximately 600 people near the park entrance after multiple altercations erupted among the departing visitors.
Gunfire subsequently broke out from several individuals, causing damage to an unoccupied CCPD police vehicle. The law enforcement officers pursued the alleged shooters into a nearby wooded area. During the pursuit, an officer fired his gun, critically injuring a 15-year-old boy named Syere Littlefield from College Park, Georgia. He was immediately rushed to Grady Hospital.
A handgun was found near the location where Littlefield was wounded. The CCPD has since reported that Littlefield is facing charges that include aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated assault, illegal possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a minor, and tampering with government property.
In response to the incident, Six Flags Over Georgia issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to providing a secure and enjoyable experience. The park employs advanced security and metal detection technology, has a comprehensive Public Safety Department, and receives significant support from the Cobb County Police, who patrol both inside and around the premises.
The amusement park further clarified that the shooting occurred on South Service Road, which is not owned or managed by Six Flags. Similar disruptive incidents among visitors also marred the park’s opening weekend in 2023, resulting in numerous teenagers being expelled from the premises.
In recent years, many amusement parks across the U.S. have introduced regulations targeted at teenage visitors to prevent altercations and ensure the safety of all guests. Parks such as Kings Island in Ohio, Great America in California, Carowinds in Charlotte, North Carolina, Worlds of Fun in Kansas City, Missouri, and Knott’s Berry Farm in California require visitors under 15 years of age to be accompanied by a guardian who is at least 21 years old.
This recommendation is also made by Cedar Point in Cleveland, Ohio, and Michigan’s Adventure in Muskegon, Michigan, advising that minors under 18 should visit with an adult. Disneyland and Disneyworld have a policy requiring guests under 14 to be accompanied by someone 14 years old or older. However, Six Flags Over Georgia has not instituted any specific chaperone policies.
Despite the previous night’s violence, park-goers at Six Flags experienced a noticeably different atmosphere on Sunday. Season pass holder Barbara Goss noted the day’s relative calmness, with fewer crowds and many rides closed.
