Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of Patrick Mahomes, the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, and a former Major League Baseball pitcher, was arrested for suspected driving while intoxicated (DWI) in Tyler, Texas on Saturday, February 3, 2024.
According to jail records, this is at least the third DWI charge for Mahomes Sr. This incident happened just before his son, Patrick Mahomes II, took a leadership role in the Chiefs Super Bowl LVIII win against the San Francisco 49ers.
Mahomes Sr., aged 53, was detained in the Smith County Jail on Saturday and was released on Sunday, February 4, after posting a $10,000 surety bond. His history includes a 2018 DWI conviction, which led to a sentence of 40 days in jail served on weekends, emphasizing a pattern of such offenses.
During a media event last week at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, journalists questioned the Chiefs’ prominent player about his father’s arrest. Mahomes responded, though he expressed his hesitation to discuss the matter in detail, indicating it was a private family concern.
“He’s doing good,” the star quarterback stated. “I don’t really want to delve into it too deeply, but he’s in good condition considering the circumstances.”
Mahomes Sr. had an 11-season MLB career from 1992 to 2003, during which he played for several teams such as the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox, among others. He took part in the 1999 National League playoffs with the Mets. Besides his sporty achievements, he is known for his podcast, “The Big Mahomes Show,” where he explores the intricacies of professional sports.
The timing of Mahomes Sr.’s arrest was a personal test for Patrick Mahomes II right before media coverage of the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory. Issues involving family members often draw unwelcome public and media scrutiny.
Given that this is his third DWI charge, Mahomes Sr. may face strict penalties upon conviction, potentially two to ten years in prison, highlighting the serious repercussions of repeated DWI offenses in Texas.
Mahomes Sr. has three children with his ex-wife Randi Martin: sons Patrick Mahomes II and Jackson Mahomes, and daughter Zoe Mahomes from a subsequent relationship.
