Hillary Clinton Calls Tucker Carlson “A Useful IDIOT”

In an event that has attracted widespread media attention, former U.S. Secretary of State and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton sharply criticized American news anchor Tucker Carlson for his interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Clinton’s remarks were made during a conversation with MSNBC host Alex Wagner, where Clinton referred to Carlson as a “useful idiot.” This term, historically used to describe individuals perceived as propagandists for causes they do not fully understand, was applied by Clinton to highlight her disdain for Carlson’s engagement with the Russian leader.

The interview between Carlson and Putin, confirmed by Carlson earlier this week in a post on the social media platform X, is a significant media event. Broadcasted on Carlson’s website, this interaction marks Putin’s first formal interview with a Western journalist since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on February 24, 2022.

The former Fox News host, who has openly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the U.S. government’s military aid to Ukraine, has been a controversial figure due to his political stances and commentary.

Clinton expressed skepticism regarding Carlson’s journalistic venture, suggesting that his actions might lead to further opportunities within Russian media circles. “You know, he somehow – after having been fired from so many outlets in the United States – I would not be surprised if he emerges with a contract with a Russian outlet because he is a useful idiot,” Clinton stated. She also accused Carlson of spreading falsehoods and echoing Putin’s narrative on the Ukraine conflict, raising questions about the journalistic integrity and motivations behind the interview.

The Kremlin has confirmed Putin’s participation in the interview, with Russian officials suggesting that Carlson’s distinct approach to the Ukraine conflict warranted the Russian President’s engagement. According to the Kremlin, Carlson’s perspective diverges from the predominantly one-sided coverage seen in Western media, presenting an opportunity for Russian views on the war to be directly communicated to an American audience.

Criticism and controversy surrounding the interview have not been limited to Clinton’s comments. The White House and various media observers have voiced concerns over providing Putin with a platform that could be used to justify the war in Ukraine without critical scrutiny. Moreover, Russian state media has been reported to amplify coverage of Carlson’s visit to Moscow, with some outlets mocking the American public’s reaction and speculating about Carlson’s intentions and the potential impact of his interview.

Despite the backlash, supporters of Carlson have defended the interview as an exercise of freedom of speech, arguing that presenting diverse viewpoints is essential for a comprehensive understanding of global conflicts. Carlson himself has stated his aim to allow Americans to hear Russia’s side of the story regarding the war in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of journalistic inquiry and dialogue.

The discourse surrounding the interview underscores the complexities of media influence, international relations, and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
