Ex-Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins guard, Tony Hutson, died on February 3, 2024, at 49. His death was confirmed by an online obituary posted by Serenity Gardens Funeral Services, but the cause has not been published.
Born on March 13, 1974, in Houston, Texas, Hutson started his football journey at MacArthur High School, playing as an offensive tackle. His career progressed at Kilgore College, and later at Northeastern Oklahoma State University. He was recognized as an NAIA All-American in 1994 and 1995, reflecting his outstanding performance on the field.
Despite his collegiate achievements, Hutson encountered early hurdles in his professional journey. In 1996, the Raiders discovered a benign tumor on his right lung during a physical examination. Unfazed by this challenge, Hutson underwent successful surgery and joined the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent post-recovery.
Throughout his tenure with the Cowboys, Hutson displayed grit and determination. He spent 1996 in the practice squad and missed most of the 1997 training camp due to wrist surgery. Regardless, he made his debut later in the year and secured his first start in a notable 17-14 victory against Washington.
Spanning from 1996 to 2001, Hutson’s NFL career included playing as a guard for the Dallas Cowboys and a brief stint with the Washington Redskins as a free agent. Later in 2001, he joined the Oakland Raiders as a free agent. His time with the Cowboys was characterized by resilience in the face of injuries and challenges. Hutson’s significant contributions, especially in safeguarding Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, were noteworthy.
Praising Hutson for his dedication to the sport and the team, teammate Randall Godfrey remembered him as one of his favorite teammates and a great friend.
Off the field, Hutson was known for his sense of humor, kind-hearted nature, and involvement in charitable activities, particularly those aimed at children. His legacy extends beyond his football career.
Hutson is survived by his mother, Joyce Figures of Dumas, AR, three children – daughter Lauren Benton and two sons, Christian Benton and Antonio Fleming, all of Houston, TX, and several siblings.
